Choosing a Roommate
It's a good idea to know the type of lifestyle and personality you are looking for before you start your roommate search. You should know yourself as a person first before you can ask questions of prospective roommates. For example, if you're a morning person, do you want a bartender as a roommate, or if you're a student, do you want a professional drummer as a roommate?
Before you start looking for a place or a roommate or both, consider these options. Are comfortable doing the investigative legwork like an interview, payment history, etc. If so, you can place a four-line roommate finder ad in a major newspaper which can run from $11 to $40. However, most newspapers won't let you be specific about how selective you want the ad to be (as it can be construed as discriminatory), so it can be a random process.
Roommate matching services can match you with someone based on the information you submit. Prospective lessors list information about their residences -- number of bedrooms, amenities -- with the service. A lessee lists the rent they want to pay and payment history.
Lastly, why search for the ideal roommate, when you could just move in with someone you already know. You would probably be less likely to run a payment history or landlord history on your friend. You may also be more likely to trust a friend to pay on time. On the other hand, problems may arise in the friendship, especially if the living arrangement does not go as planned. Statistics show that over half of the people seeking a roommate come from a "broken" best friend roommate situation.
